Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone Massage Therapy is a new exciting massage treatment sweeping the country and is today one of the most sought after treatments in the Spa and Beauty Industry.

It goes beyond the physical experience of typical massage and enters deeper dimensions of relaxation, health and well-being. The use of hot and cool stones in massage therapy is a specialised treatment using basalt (hot stones) and marble (cool stones).

What are Basalt Stones?

These are volcanic rocks found on the exterior of a volcano. They are formed from the hot lava that spills out of the volcano as it erupts. Over many thousands of years they are exposed to the elements (sun, wind, heat and cold conditions, rain and pressure) These factors press the minerals together forming a concentrated mass of minerals and crystals. These mineral stones are well known for their heat and cold retention properties, which makes them a perfect choice for stone therapy.

How the stones are heated?

The special, smooth lava stones are heated to a comfortably warm temperature prior to treatment in a special stone heater.

Benefits

A Hot Stone Massage Therapy is a unique experience which benefits the lymphatic system creating gentle but efficient drainage. It provides a deeper elimination of toxins and blockages than with normal massage. It improves skin firmness and vibrancy and provides deeper relaxation and reduced muscle tension.

History of Hot Stone Massage Therapy

Stone therapy has been used for over 2,000 years. Native American women used to place a warmed stone on their belly during menses. Roman baths involved hot water and tables of hot and cold stones to lie on. Pilgrims would put a hot stone at the end of their bed to warm their feet. Fasting Japanese priests would wear a sash in which 3 warm stones were placed to help to slow down their digestive process. Ancient Chinese, Egyptians and American Indians used stones for healing.

What happens during a treatment?

A blend of oils is made up especially for you, according to your likes and requirements for use with the stones. The heat from the stones can penetrate the tissue layers up to and over 1.5 inches and is carried down to the deepest layers of the blood. This is known as conduction which brings about local physiological and systemic changes to the body. The longer the application of warm stones on the body, the deeper the penetration to muscle tissue and joints, increasing the metabolism by 10% to 15%. The smooth rounded hot stones of varying sizes are placed around, under and on top of the body, from the forehead to between the toes, giving a deep massage, creating a sensation of warmth and comfort. They retain their heat on the body for as long as possible and can also be used in conjunction with other therapies eg. acupuncture, aromatherapy, colonic hydrotherapy, reflexology and facial massage.

Cool Stones

Cold stones have a de-congesting, soothing effect on specific areas (such as sinuses) and are used in isolated areas or treatments. They refresh and stimulate the mind and can be used to cool down the body on a warm day or during hot flushes.

Consultation

At your initial consultation and treatment, Wendy will complete a case history noting any medication you may be taking, lifestyle, ailments and any conditions past and present. Advice may be given in areas such as aftercare, diet, herbs, posture, fluid intake, exercise, etc. A treatment plan is then carried out where we can discuss your requirements.

How much does it cost?

£40 per treatment, lasting approximately one hour. Your first treatment will include a full consultation and will last about one and a half hours.
